Whether you are a Pakistani yourself, or simply just want to experience a taste of the rich and diverse culture of the country, SOAS’s two Pakistan-affiliated societies can be some of the best places to start.
The SOAS Pakistan Society (Paksoc) dates all the way back to 1968, and over the course of many years, has grown to be one of the largest societies on campus. Pakistanis from all over the world gather in this diverse community. They celebrate their rich heritage through different events that include, but are not limited to, Pakistani Cuisine themed feasts, and cultural nights.
Paksoc aims to promote culture, raise awareness and educate others. It is the place to go if you want to connect with fellow students and experience the warmth of shared heritage, whether that means indulging in traditional dishes during a gathering or taking part in one of the many cultural events.
On the other hand, the SOAS Pakistan Discussion Forum (PDF) encourages students to participate in insightful discussions that explore the important problems that Pakistan is currently facing. It is a place for critical thinkers who want to discuss perspectives and gain an intricate understanding of the opportunities and problems of modern day Pakistan. This initiative was created last year. This has not stopped the society from already establishing themselves as a highly respected forum, having hosted various prominent guests including Pervez Hoodbhoy, Zulfi Bukhari and Professor Ishtiaq Ahmed.
Anyone who is curious about having a meaningful debate about the urgent political and social issues that Pakistan is currently experiencing should attend these discussions. There is an emphasis on encouraging critical thinking and a diversity of viewpoints: from the perspectives of academics, politicians, journalists and lawyers.
With their respective focus on various facets of the Pakistani experience, the SOAS Pakistan Society and the SOAS Pakistan Discussion Forum both provide distinctive platforms for interaction. Whereas the Forum prioritises critical discourse on urgent political and social concerns, the Society concentrates on cultural festivals and social events. Both platforms aim to establish a friendly environment where students can interact, learn, and develop despite these distinctions. Eventually, by taking part in one or both, you will not only enhance your time at university, but also support a lively community devoted to honouring tradition and promoting thoughtful discussions about Pakistan's future.
