SOAS’s Peer Mentoring Programme

Being able to make a positive impact on someone’s university experience has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my time at SOAS.

Starting university is a thrilling milestone filled with opportunities for personal growth and discovery. From adapting to new academic demands to finding your place within a diverse community. However, the transition can also be challenging. To ease this process, SOAS has the Peer Mentoring Programme - a student-led initiative designed to foster connections, provide personalised guidance, and help first- and second-year students feel supported as they navigate their university journey.

The Peer Mentoring Programme is a collaborative effort within the Student Experience, Engagement and Retention team. At its core, the Programme connects mainly first-year students with experienced student mentors from their academic departments. By aligning mentees and mentors based on shared academic interests, the Programme ensures that the support provided is both personalised and relevant. This helps students navigate their educational and social lives with confidence.

The SOAS Peer Mentoring Programme operates through a hybrid model that combines in-person meetings with virtual support via Microsoft Teams. This dial approach ensures that the Programme remains flexible and accessible, catering to the diverse needs of SOAS students, whether they are living around campus, commuting, or studying remotely.

Each mentee is matched with a mentor from the same academic department to ensure relevant and personalised guidance. At the start of the Programme, mentors and mentees are introduced through an orientation session. This outlines the Programme’s objectives and establishes expectations for both parties. Mentors are encouraged to set up regular check-ins, either face-to-face or online, depending on what works best for their mentees.

Mentors assist with a wide range of topics, including answering academic queries, providing advice on managing coursework deadlines, and sharing insights about departmental resources. They also play a crucial role in helping students navigate campus life, such as: understanding how to access libraries, student services, or extracurricular opportunities.

For students who prefer virtual engagement, Microsoft Teams serves as a platform for mentorship, enabling them to stay connected through chats, video calls, and shared resources. This ensures that even those unable to attend in-person sessions can still receive the support and guidance they need. Additionally, mentors often share helpful tips on adapting to university life, from time management strategies to balancing academic and social commitments.
