Four Societies You Should Know About
By Hala Haidar, BA Global Development
SOAS dis-Orient Society
Dis-Orient is a society that aims to uplift the voices and create a community for East and South-East Asians (ESEA) at SOAS (but all are welcome!). We are both a social and political society, aiming to create a community through events like meet-ups and fun events, whilst also inviting speakers or having film/documentary screenings with discussions and talks. Please follow our Instagram (@soasdisorient) and join our WhatsApp group, which is in the link on our Instagram to keep up to date, as we will be hosting fortnightly meetings!
SOAS Ceilidh Band
You are invited to join the famous SOAS Ceilidh Band (pronounced cay-lee). Our band plays the traditional dance music of the British Isles and Ireland. We organise ceilidh dances and each year we play, tour and gig around SOAS, in London and even overseas. We invite new members to JOIN THE BAND – fiddles, flutes, guitars, drums, whatever you play.
SOAS Debate Society & Speaking Union
At SOAS Debate Society we welcome both novice and experienced debaters, as well as spectators. We will be hosting two monthly sessions: debate sessions, and training workshops in hopes of bringing light to conversations that are often unaddressed and controversial, whilst allowing students to express themselves. We hope for people to find a voice and a safe space with us.
SOAS Herb Society
The Herb Society aims to teach our members to learn about the medicinal properties of herbs, uses of spices, and provide them with the skills to safely forage for herbs and fruits, making the most of the resources our planet has to offer! We will also teach how to use natural sources for dyeing fabrics and host regular tea-tasting workshops as well as broaden our knowledge by attending herb walks and lectures.
