SOAS Spirit Training Day
The SOAS Spirit is hosting a training day this Saturday, the 25th of October.The Talk segment commences from 11am until 12.30pm, it will be held in G3. Following the talk are classroom based training sessions led by editors from the SOAS Spirit on writing features, news, sub editing, copy editing and on photography. Everyone is welcome!
Confirmed Speakers
Rita Payne is the President of the Commonwealth Journalists Association, an association aimed to promote free, bold and honest journalism across the Commonwealth. Rita is a member of the executive board of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. She worked for nearly thirty years at the BBC until her retirement in 2008. Her last position at the BBC was Asia Editor, BBC World News (TV) with responsibility for three news programmes a day. Before moving to TV, Rita was a news editor/producer/presenter at BBC World Service radio. She has moderated sessions at the One World Media Festival, 2012 Rotary World Peace Symposium in Bangkok and key dialogues at the UN World Urban Forum in Rio de Janeiro and Nanjing. (www.cja-uk.org)
Linda Melvern is an investigative journalist and an author. She was a consultant to the Military One prosecution team at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She has written for the London Evening Standard, the Guardian, The Sunday Times and in academic journals. She is the author of Conspiracy to Murder: The Rwanda Genocide (2006) and A People Betrayed: The Role of the West in Rwanda’s Genocide (2000). (www.lindamelvern.com)
Brian Deer is an investigative journalist who is well known for his inquires into the pharmaceutical drug industry, particularly the MMR Vaccine controversy. He has also written for the Times and the Guardian.(www.briandeer.com)
